Just Visiting

Do you currently have any avoided tasks on your to-do list?

Are there things you keep pushing back day after day with no idea when you will finally buckle down and get them done?

If you live with ADHD, you probably answered yes to those questions.

Don't worry, you're not alone. This is a common problem for people with ADHD.

If you don't have the desire to do the task, or if you find the task boring, you're less likely to want to tackle the project.

When I’m working with clients or the members in our GPS Program, I explain the benefit of breaking things down into their smallest parts to make the task easier to start.

On a recent episode of Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, our guest, Dr. Kourosh Dini, explained just how small that first step can be.

It's called 'visiting'.

Here's how Dr. Kourosh explains the visit:

The visit is when you show up to a piece of work ... and you just show up—you move distractions aside, and you're just fully with the thing. You don't have to do any of it. ... You're just there with it...

That's it! During these visits, no work is being done, but you're still putting your focus on a task, even if it's just for a little while.

When you have ADHD, if something is out of sight, then it's most likely out of your mind. But what if you added these visits into your schedule? Then, those avoided tasks are given a place in your mind.

After a few of these visits, you may realize that the time you're spending could be used to maybe open the document, or you might find you could make a small adjustment here or there. Before you know it, you may find yourself working on this project without putting much effort into forcing yourself into it.

Plan your next visit

So, what do you think about visiting? Do you think this is something that might help you tackle some of those avoided tasks and get them off your to-do list once and for all?

Give it a try. Add a visit to your schedule and see how it feels.

Good luck!

Thank you for your time and attention,

Nikki
